One out of every 52 reported home fires that began with a Christmas tree resulted in a death, according to statistics from the National Fire Protection Association.

Houston firefighters on Tuesday gave a demonstration on just how easy it is for a Christmas tree in a living room to catch fire and gave safety tips on the use of extension cords, candle safety, cooking safety, space heater safety and the importance of working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

According to the Houston Fire Department, there were more than 80 home and apartment fires in the city of Houston during December last year, and caused more than $3 million in estimated damage.
